Gregory I the Great

Gregory I the Great
Pope (q.v.) from 590-604 who is considered the greatest of the early medieval popes; saint. He refused to recognize the title of "Ecumenical Patriarch" that John IV "Faster" (q.v.), archbishop of Constantinople (qq.v.) proclaimed for himself. John was supported by Maurice (q.v.), whose overthrow in 602 Gregory welcomed. Maurice's successorPhokas (q.v.), howeverunpopular he was in Constantinople, was esteemed by Gregory, who erected a column in the Roman forum in his honor. Among Gregory's many achievements was the maintenance of papal independence against the Lombards (qq.v.), and his sending of St. Augustine of Canterbury to England (q.v.) to organize the church there.
